The Hala Carbon Straight Up is a new board to our quiver this year, and proudly sits as the all around do anything go anywhere board. This smaller sized performance board has been excellent for navigating small whitewater sections of my local river, traveling, and it’s super stable with the dogs. It’s also surprisingly lightweight compared to most of the other inflatables I’ve owned.
But the most impressive feature of this board is the carbon fiber stringer that runs along the deck and bottom of the board. Hala claims this technology makes their boards 3 times more rigid than traditional inflatables. After putting this board through some testing of my own, with 90 lbs. of Aussies – I completely agree.
When you stand on an inflatable in the water and jump up and down on the board you get what I like to call the “water mattress effect.” When I tried this with the Hala Straight Up Carbon, that water mattress effect was significantly less! This inflatable absolutely feels more rigid than any other inflatable I‘ve ever used.
This is wonderful when paddling with dogs! When a big dog moves around on a board that movement is translated throughout the board making it feel unstable. This new carbon technology is bridging the performance gap between hard boards and inflatables, so I’m really excited to recommend these to anyone who’s on the fence about what type of board to purchase for dogs.
A few other features that make this board a great dog-friendly option include:
- Eight D-rings for strapping down gear and bags
- Carry handles on the nose and the tail for easier loading and unloading
- An all around shape that’s efficient and stable for beginners and dogs
- A stomp pad and a foot index for easier maneuvering
- A three-year warranty
- A super tough rolling duffel bag for travel and storage
You can learn more about the additional features on the Hala website.
